Hambantota Bird Park: Our trip highlight!
After a long, long, LONG drive on a highway, we finally reached Hambantota, and a little while after exiting the highway, we saw the entering board to the Bird Park! However, little did we know that even after turning from the entrance board, we were still a LONG way from the park itself. We kept driving and driving and driving! It felt never-ending. As we drove, we came across another unexpected surprise! We saw a Solar Power Plant! It was huge and there were thousands and thousands of solar panels in it. After some research, we found out that this is one of the first solar power plants in Sri Lanka and it opened in 2016. The goal of this project was to turn to renewable energy and provide power through the area through Solar Energy.
Finally, we arrived at Bird Park. At the entrance, there were some stalls that sold mango 'Achcharu', which is a spicy and popular street food Sri Lankans love. It's just mango tossed in in chilli, pepper and salt! We could not resist buying a few!
Happy to have found Achcharu, we entered the gates of the Bird Park and brought tickets. They have directions that took us through many different species of birds! We saw a variety of peacocks. pheasant birds, macaws, and parrots, flamingos, ostriches, and emus! Enjoy the pictures below.
Our favourite parts were when we saw a peacock spread out its feathers (click here to watch) and also when we saw some pheasant bird who could not fly roaming about freely with us! (click here to watch)
We finished seeing all the different birds in about 1 hour. We came to the cafeteria area and a feeding area. In the feeding area, we could pay 500/- ruppees and feed the macaws. We went in with the caretakers and they gave us seeds. They told us to hold the seeds in our hands and the macaws would come to us! The feeding was the BEST experience we could ask for from the whole tour! They birds were really heavy and seemed very hungry. They were all over us too! On our heads, and arms and clinging on to our clothes! It was such a unique experience that was a first for both of us and worth the long drive! We left the park feeling happy that decided to come!
Walking back towards the exit we decided to celebrate our trip by posing with the Ostriches! They all looked very supprised to see us!
